Learn About Training Room Furniture
By Chris Stormer
Educators are asking more and more of school furniture today. Can it play an active role in the day’s lesson plan? Can it withstand hard use? School furniture has always been designed for functionality. The earliest school furniture may have consisted of long desks and long benches, which were mostly made up of wood. Each of the desks must be shared among at least 4 or 5 students.

There are some inconveniences in this system, the joint sitting creating some problem among the students and in past it wasn’t taken into consideration i.e. different sizes and shapes. Because of it one who was sitting back would find it very hard to concentrate in the classes and some students’ knees hit the top of the desk.

To over come all these problems now a day many schools have changed their long benches and desks into individual chairs and desks. These are more comfortable for the students and it gives more freedom to the student’s body also. Instead of wooden furniture now steel and plastic furniture are mostly preferred by schools because of their cheap cost and easy handling facilities.

The height of chairs generally refers to the height of the top of the seat. Children who are in grade six or above will likely be comfortable in chairs designed for adults, but children in younger grades may require lower chairs. The standard chair height for adult is 17.5”-18”.

Desks may or may not have the chair attached, may or may not have a book basket. The height of the desk and seat height if attached should also be considered. The seat height should be sufficient for the students to place their feet comfortably on the floor while being seated. There should be approximately 8 to 10” of clearance between

the top of the chair and bottom of the writing surface.

The computer tables also come under the category of school furniture. The tables should be sized appropriately for the size of the children. The older students will be comfortable using computer table designed for adults. The types of computer used are another factor. Schools that use laptops may use simple tables where as school using personal computers need to provide a table which will accommodate the C.P.U, monitor and keyboard adequately.

School lockers also come under the section of school furniture. Sizes of the school lockers can vary but the administrative members should consider carefully their need before selecting a particular size and style of the locker.

The steel shelving units are also typically less expensive than the wooden units. The height of the library shelving units can vary according to the number of books maintained by the school for references.
